Radiesse
Radiesse is a technologically advanced cosmetic dermal filler that lasts longest of the available non-permanent filler products. Numerous medical studies have shown that Radiesse is a safe, long lasting treatment to fill and correct smile lines and nasolabial folds around the nose and mouth. Longevity ranges up to 2 years and effects are immediate.
As a Facial Contouring agent, Radiesse can be used for:
- Nasolabial folds
- Marionette lines
- Cheek augmentation
- Non-surgical rhinoplasty
- Jaw line
- Chin augmentation

What makes Radiesse different from other dermal fillers?
Radiesse is made of very small, smooth calcium hydroxylapitite (CaHA) microspheres, which are suspended in a water-based gel carrier. As Radiesse is injected, the gel and Radiesse Microspheres form a “scaffold”, stimulating collagen production and encouraging tissue growth in and around the injection area. This “partnership” between Radiesse and your own body creates a natural look, comprised of your own tissue and Radiesse Microspheres.
Over time, your body absorbs the gel carrier as your collagen has started to grow and infiltrate the area, replacing the gel with your own, natural tissue. The Radiesse Microspheres continue to provide the support and structure for your body to grow new tissue and collagen until the Microspheres are also safely and naturally absorbed into your body.
Even after the Radiesse is gone, there is the benefit of your own collagen replacement. Although injection of dermal fillers does not stop the aging process, your new collagen growth is able to set the clock back a bit by keeping your skin firmer and smoother.
Is a Skin Test Required?
No pretreatment kin testing is required. Because Radiesse has a 100% biocompatible formulation, is has minimal risk of causing unexpected allergic response. CaHA has been used in orthopedic surgical products for many years and is a proven safe material.

*Radiesse is used worldwide. The FDA has approved Radiesse in the US for nasolabial folds. Other uses are considered “off label”. Such use is completely within acceptance as physicians are allowed to determine how to use the product.
The Role of Radiesse in Instant Facial “Lifting” or “Volumizing”
Radiesse along with softer fillers such as Juvederm, Perlane or Restylane are core components in what is termed a liquid facelift. Most often Botox plays a substantial role in face “lifting” as it allows muscles to relax, alleviating frowns and furrows that tend to push down the brow.
Injectables refill the deflating “balloon” that comes from age-related volume loss and descent of the facial tissues and muscle. By restoring height to the cheekbones, filling hollowed cheek areas, filling in eye hollows, augmenting chin and lips, you can restore the contours that are lost through the aging process.
An alternative (or adjunctive) product that provides a more global or generalized volume restoration is Sculptra. Sculptra is not instant in its effects because the lift and fill it provides is actually from your own collagen. Sculptra is a bio-catalyst for new collagen growth.
The Importance of Injection Technique and Training
Radiesse and Sculptra both require expert injection technique and specialized training. Due to the nature of the products, their long term effects and the specific placement needs, you should seek out a Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon who has the medical educational background and has undergone the training for these injectable products. Dr. Blumenstrauch and the associate physicians and Physician Assistants are properly trained with many years of experience in filler injections.
The Radiesse Process of Integration and Stimulation
The cosmetic results are soft and natural-looking, and feel like your own tissue. The results are long-lasting, but not permanent. The CaHA microspheres naturally degrade to calcium and phosphate ions, which are metabolized by the body’s normal processes.
Upon injection, RADIESSE dermal filler immediately adds volume to facial features.
After two to three months, macrophages start to dissolve the sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel carrier. The CaHA microspheres remain.
Macrophages continue to dissolve the gel carrier. Fibroblasts form new collagen.
New resident tissue (collagen) surrounds the CaHA microspheres.
The CaHA microspheres degrade and are phagocytized and metabolized by macrophages.
Even the small fragments of CaHA are decomposed at the implant site, without evidence of migration.
